Cow Head on the western coast of Newfoundland and our visit of "the Arches". Many thanks again to Google - enlarge map to see it! These maps are a great help.
We felt sorry to leave National Park Gros Morne behind us, but we wanted to promote Newfoundland to attract people from the German speaking parts of Europe to invest in the resort which was under construction. We had received a contract to do this.
We were still amazed about the beautiful scenery and all the little things which we discovered by meeting people and their friendliness. A paradise for nature lovers who want to relax, habe a peaceful time filled with clean fun.
Newfoundland-Labrador was not well known as a tourist destination and in order to find buyers of homes and to allow rent them as vacation homes to visitors you must attract them by presenting this province in a trustful way. We succeeded to attract many travelers from Europe, who send us thank you notes and even pictures, but the cooperation between the German marketing partner and the resort did not last and we had not a single sale. However, our love to Newfoundland and Labrador is still unbroken. Nature and the people are the main reason for that. We loved every part of this province.
Elizabeth was a great help by writing notes which helped me by preparing my Internet travel guide and both of us tried not to miss no attractions on our way to Cow Head.
Easy access to the wreck, close to Sally's Cove
The few remains of the wreck of "S.S. Ethie"
Close to Sally's Cove we stopped to see the few remains of a ship wreck. The S.S. Ethie had stranded here during a severe storm on December 11. 1919. Not too much was left from this steam ship with additional sails. It had carried 92 people on board. All were saved. Read the posted information. Even a folks song was written about that event.
After a leisurely tip we arrived in Cow Head
Cow Head is a small, but picturesque fishing village with less than 500 people living in it, but it has a theater. Tourism must create jobs which are being lost because of over fishing.
We stopped very often to take pictures and even I walked as much as I could. We tried again to find somebody who would take us with his vessel on an actual fishing tour. Finally we succeeded but failed again. Such tours were not offered. Obviously this is not allowed or the insurance costs are too high and the demand too low.
After having read the story about S.S. Ethie and knowing how fast the weather can change I accepted that a normal fisherman would not take a risk.
The little harbor
How many boats were out for fishing?
