A critical review of the performance of tourism in Ontario

I prepared as a volunteer as a thank you to my new home country alternative Internet ravel guides. I never asked for any money, but I was asking questions and for certain none financial help.
I received this from the government In Newfoundland and Labrador but not from that of Ontario. Only from a few cities and small organizations.
Now I am almost 80 years old and before I vanish I will try a last attempt as shake up call to help - not only by criticizing but also to show what can be done.
I am a retired German engineer and not a marketing expert. But I have common sense and as an engineer I was challenged to create something new and a manager to keep schedules and avoid cost overruns. That was nor always achievable but I tried my best.

What I do not like and why - especially for the overseas market

What I do not like
Reasons why!
Too many duplications of promoting tourism.
Waste of money and sometimes very poorly designed.

Not acceptable statements, such as "prettiest town of Canada" or "green capital of Canada"

This only shows that the writers do not know our country. Not everybody has the same the same taste. A presentation should create trust by showing proof.

Internet should be used much better. The present concept needs to be replaced.

Easy readable cards of the tourist regions with the most important places are required. The expectations of the visitors of the respective countries must be known and addressed.

Cultural and social differences are not mentioned at all. Also not essentials such as the different traffic regulations.

This should be done to prevent frustrations and even accidents. Are you not afraid of product liability claims?

There is no need to compete against the yellow pages in order to attract visitors. Almost everybody who comes from overseas needs accommodations and restaurants.

Those places should place proper and paid advertisement in web sites which are mainly funded by tax payers. Nobody comes from far away because we offer accommodations and restaurants. We should concentrate on showing our country in a way which makes people willing to come.

Data bases to search for certain things are great. But after entering three times key words and nothing can found I leave the site.

Naturally entries should be paid and when certain things are not available they cannot be entered. To reduce this problem I modified our shopping cart and used a better concept, which makes clear which categories are not available yet in our data base.

Finding excuses instead of solutions to overcome problems.

Managers are not paid for finding excuses. They are paid for solving problems.

Worldwide politicians are considered to be qualified for almost every job without having a suitable education and a proper track record.

Find qualified people which have a proof for their qualification. There is big difference between talking and doing. A time ago I told one politician what I recommended. His answer was "We know all that". Naturally I responded "why are you not doing it than"? I am still waiting for his answer.

Statistics show that the tourism inbound is declining

Our health system should cover all Canadians for a limited time within Canada. That should be a task for our politicians.

Slide shows and videos are a good approach to attract visitors from all over the world if properly made such as those from Newfoundland-Labrador. Most of the official ones for Ontario are far away from this quality. Many travelers are older and have other priorities!

Most of those official videos and slides hows have obviously be created by youngsters without any background knowledge about foreign visitors. Many people do not share the same priorities as young North Americans. The culture is different!

The statistics are of now value for me. Age groups, how long people stay, reason why they came to Ontario are only a few things which need to be known. Certainly you cannot track how much money they spent but maybe you should ask when they leave - offer something in return for mandatory information.

It is impossible to define target groups if you do not know them.

Summary

As you can see I am also able to be arrogant. I wasted so much time trying to work together with absolutely unqualified organizations paid by us tax payers.
They made presentations which were obviously written by high paid ghost writers.
Tourism is not a science compared with high technology. I had read reports in which was stated that tourism from Germany went down because of economical problems over there. A few paragraphs later it was stated that tourism from German to another country (I believe it was New Zealand) went up.
I still love Canada and Ontario. I became a few years ago a Canadian citizen and proceeded as thank you with my work.
My conclusions is that you need better and innovative people in key positions. Prepare job description and use those to measure their performance.
A big mouth does not replace analytical thinking and common sense.
