Before we did our little sightseeing tour through Bancroft we had lunch in a German restaurant.
Naturally, I had Schnitzel with a beer and Elizabeth coffee and all of my red cabbage. Again, she was on a diet and not hungry!
But both of us liked this place.
I was very happy to get served German food. Normally, I always have to prepare this myself if I want it.
Now there are almost no restaurants offering German cuisine and I fear that the "Black Forest Schnitzelhaus" is no longer there. I could not find it on the internet anymore
The "Black Forest Schnitzel House"
Bancroft is known as the "Mineral Capital" of Canada. I always have my doubts when I hear things like that.
So don't be surprised when you see minerals offered in many places. Maybe you can go "rock hunting" - just ask!
If you like "rockhounding" which means that you have to find and collect the minerals by yourself ask for actual information. In certain areas, a fee has to be paid. Watch the videos I've installed.
We did not do any rockhounding. We bought a few of them as souvenirs
Bancroft is not very big. It has about 4000 inhabitants and is located on the York River. It has a charming environment, which not only invites to stone collecting.
We bought some souvenirs in this shop
Surely you will meet some collectors or geologists here. If you want to try your luck yourself, please contact the local
"Chamber of Commerce", Tel. 613-332-1513.
They have prepared all sorts of help and even guided tours.
In addition to the minerals, there is also uranium. This was discovered in 1949 and mined up to 1982 in the "Madawaska mine". But that is closed now.
Not all offered stones are from this area.
Business is responding to the booming demand. Not only raw stones are offered. You can get them polished and in different shapes.
One exploits the boom and the demand and therefore wants to offer everything ..
Of course, there are also beautiful, processed stones in all forms and for all sorts of purposes, such as "healing stones" etc.
Elizabeth has been given a healing stone by a friend. As expected, it did not help. The electro-acupuncture device we had offered helped at least for a few hours, comparable to pills.
View from our "Eagle's Nest" - many thanks for the picture!
Beautiful surroundings - many thanks for the picture
Bancroft is not very large but nicely located on the York River and the surrounding is not only attractive to stone collectors.
You may have heard about the "Eagle's Nest" on the Obersalzberg in Bavaria. where Hitler entertained certain guests. I am confident that he never had visited the "Eagle's Nest" close to Bancroft which offers also a beautiful view. Our "Eagle's Nest" is only a steep cliff and not comparable to the original, the "Kehlsteinhaus" - but maybe it was or is home only to eagles and not to a dictator.
The old train station - many thanks to Wikipedia and P199
The railway line does not exist anymore and the tracks were at least partially replaced by a bike path.
The station has been moved to another location and is now one of the attractions.
For example visit in Bancroft the art gallery, which also shows works from local artists.
Die "Tranquil Tait Lake Cottage" - many thanks for the picture
We know some families who own a cottage in this area and regularly spend a weekend or even a longer holiday there. Some rent this too.
Normally you have to book in time. We prefer that to a hotel or motel, as most have direct access to a lake.
Otherwise you have to be content with public beaches.
There are plenty of lakes here, choose the one that suits you and if you see a cottage that you like, book it for your next vacation if you want to come back.
In the "Silent Lake Provincial Park" - many thanks to "Whpq" and Wikipedia
Unfortunately we were not able to visit the "Silent Lake Provincial Park" during our brief tour.
We are not doing camping any longer and for that reason we only buy a day pass. Usually we only spend a few hours in parks swimming or boating.
I wish they would offer cottages in the parks.
Whenever we have a chance we will check out the so called "Yurts" which offer some more comfort than a tent.
Paudash Lake - many thanks to "Bcrawford" and Wikipedia
